<< A Serious Man | Found art >><< Two Kids | Found art >><< Unfinished Woman | Found art >>

I picked up these pieces yesterday.

I fall in love with portraits.

There is something very personal and wonderful about a well done portrait.

They remind me of a time when everything trickled and moved at a much slower pace. When people were not texting, eating, and having a fragmented conversation all at once. When people actually had the time to sit for hours in one position to be frozen inside the parameters of a canvas.

My friend Jamesson picked up for me the latest issue of Vanity Fair with cover monster Lady Gaga. After scrutinizing the picks for 2010’s Best Dressed, I read a blip on photographer Alex Prager.

You’ve most likely seen her work and didn’t realize it. That tight close-up of Bryce Dallas Howard with crimson lips coupled with tear-fraught eyes is from Despair, Prager’s latest venture into moving film.

I’ve seen press for her before in my glossies but today I actually browsed around her site. Her images remind me of Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills series (1977 – 1980). There’s even a leading lady character in a Valley of the Dolls-inspired image that resembles one of Sherman’s alters.

Prager is inspired by the work of William Eggleston and believes that “all women are actresses”.

<< DALAT untitled for now | New documenting >>

I am experimenting with a different DALAT documenting look and since I am highly neurotic and ungodly particular, it took a million shots to get it to this. This was a men’s tank that shredded to a ridiculously long net tube. The tank alone yielded an infinity scarf and this dress -that I would keep for myself. However, it would make me much happier to send it off to someone who loves it just as much as I do.

This dress is a good example of Zero Waste Design. Read the NY Times article on this movement.

The shredding is double layered. The second layer slides back up the body and knots asymmetrically on the right shoulder. The fit is to die for. Wear the proper foundation because although it is a double shred, it is still see-through. Adjust the rust cord to define the waist.

Go about your day and conquer all.

<< In Italy, a Factory Becomes an Eclectic Home | NY Times >><< Duilio Forte's Treehouse | Image from the NY Times >><< Inside Duilio Forte's Treehouse | Image from the NY Times >>

Oh me oh my.

Some of my favorite things.

A treehouse and wooden sculptures of animals scattered as if you were seeking refuge in an ark. The home is on the outskirts of Milan and belongs to artist/achitect Duilio Forte. Forte created all of the Troy-inspired horses including a 60- foot stud with a sauna for a heart.

Below is another one of my faves, restrained minimalism and Thonet chairs (painted gray!!). The house, designed by Sepka Architects, is located outside Prague and is referred to by neighbors as “the marshmallow house” because of the pink-polyurethane sheathing. The more appropriate name for this home would be ‘the hill inside the home’ or ‘the calves-sculpting house’. Just take a peek at the slideshow to see what I am talking about.

<< Vintage skirt and hand-sewn tag >>

I used to go away for camp every summer. I was and still am very particular about my clothing and belongings, so I would order iron-on name labels and adhere them to every article packed. I even rounded off the edges to the labels because it was strongly suggested in the instructions.

I spotted this name label inside an amazing vintage skirt the other day and had to take a picture. The name, color, and typeface look so perfect and cohesive against that nubby tweed.

Let’s not overlook the fact that it was hand-sewn and not ironed on.

Where are you Cornelia M. Quaglia?

<< Joseph Beuys | Watching the tube >>

<< Joseph Beuys | Metal Bucket >>

I was very happy to be able to see and walk into a number of different Joseph Beuys works/installations in Paris (Centre Pompidou) and Munich (Pinakothek der Moderne). I was pretty close to getting kicked out of the Pinakothek for snapping pictures of the Felt Suit.

And at the beginning of this year, I went to the Beuys show at the LACMA. All of this research will come in handy now because it’s the focus for the next batch.

Happy Friday the 13th!

Tonight I’m going to watch anything with clothing sliced to ribbons and doused with boat-loads of fake blood!

Check out the article Is Shredding Over? Not So Fast by Ruth La Ferla in the NY Times. It’s just so appropriate for today.
