I love the cover of this book. Sometimes, not always, I will purchase a book just for the cover. In this case, I am sure the contents are worth the buy.

The model looks a teeny weeny bit like a young Juliette Lewis.

Everything has been black and white lately. And all I could think of was the scene in The Wizard of Oz (1939) where Dorothy exits the discarded color information of Kansas and enters the saturated Techinicolored world of Oz. The editorial Birds of Paradise featuring model Soo Jin in Tokion (Spring 2010) has captured that moment for me.

<< I swear I didn't Ozzy that chick | Photo by Anhie Nguyen >>

I had Vietnamese last night with some friends, and it made me realize how much I miss my mom’s cooking. I am pretty adventurous with what I eat. I thank my mother for never giving me a choice during meal time and for “selling” me on certain dishes. She taught me about the hot and cold balance in Chinese/Vietnamese foods. And she told me that some foods would improve your complexion and others would ruin it.

My friend Melissa asked me last night if there were dishes that I hated. I wrote it on my chalkboard so that I could think about it. I wouldn’t necessarily rule out eating the things listed below because I am very open minded to different cultures and in that respect, the food they have to offer.

To be clear, this list officially contains-

FOOD THAT FLOWER WOULD HAVE A REALLY HARD TIME EATING:

+ turtle blood ( I saw on it mixed with sake on Bizarre Foods)

+ alcohol made from the fermented saliva of local tribe (seen on No Reservations)

+ dog, cat, rat, squirrel, pigeon

+ still beating snake heart

+ mashed up insect patty served raw (seen on Man Vs. Wild)

<< B Side Recorded | Johannes Albers >>

I found some fun work by Johannes Albers on Other Criteria. Most of the items are signed and I think that you should check it out.

+ + + + +

Reproducing images of popular culture and everyday domesticity, Johannes Albers’ work seems to simultaneously praise and poke fun at modern-day interests and values. Starting out with the intention to ‘do the opposite of what was really hip’, Albers’ work has encompassed a range of printed motifs, from bathmats to band tapes, ping-pong tables to Stanley knives. His incessant reproduction of these images reflects – and criticises – the disposability of much of today’s media culture and marketing imagery. His intention is to ‘one day see the uncorrupted mirror-images of this world. A twin world with extensions or channels into the real world’.

<< I AM RICH iPhone App. | $999 >>

Does anyone remember the “I am rich” iPhone app that set you back about a G. Well, if you do not, let me school you. For just some pocket change to someone like Paris Hilton (she bought it), you could have a red diamond icon on your phone. This zaniness went down in mid-2008.

<< Yohji Yamamoto | archive | nomenus quarterly >>

Now let me tell you about nomenus quarterly. It WAS the most expensive fashion slash art magazine and almost as ridiculous as the red status gem. It was printed in a very limited run of 10 and would have set you back $6,500. This was the going rate about 8 months ago. This gimmick proved unsuccessful (a sock monkey could have predicted that) because they no longer sell the publication. They only sell limited work at the NY Gagosian. Artists and designers featured in the past included Lucian Freud, Gerhard Richter, Rachel Feinstein, Adam Fuss, Valentino, Yohji Yamamoto and Ann Demeulemeester.

<< The Row | nomenus quarterly >><< The Row | nomenus quarterly >><< The Row | nomenus quarterly >><< The Row | nomenus quarterly >><< The Row | nomenus quarterly >>

I decided to post images for The Row. I love the blatant Hitchcock Birds (1963) references. The first time I saw that movie I was convinced that Tippi Hedren was the most beautiful woman in the world- specifically the scene where she is in a rowboat and a bird randomly attacks her head leaving a bloody scratch on her perfectly coiffed head.

Explore the nomenus quarterly site. Explore the archives. It is free and you will only feel as if you are stealing.

<< Henry the Octopus >>

I just grabbed a brick, busted out a store-front window and loaded up with as many EP’s and CD’s and albums that my arms could carry. Only I did it all from my laptop in the privacy of my workroom with the ease of a 2010 Olympic octopus. And it was less frantic than you could imagine. That’s what I have been doing for the past 3 hours. Yes three, it takes a long time to screen out shitty music.

Sometimes I am convinced that I do creative work just to zone out and listen to music – if that makes any sense. Don’t get me wrong, I love making things with my hands, but sometimes I love listening to music even more. I would get restless just listening to music sitting still and so it’s an excuse to keep my hands busy.

I am posting this editorial from POP #22 Spring/Summer for a couple of reasons. One, Devon Aoki is the only notable person that I saw while I was away in LA, (I know) and it was the week of the Grammys. She was wearing boho-floral and a floppy Sienna-Miller-esque hat in case you were wondering. On V-Day, I went to the H&M in Seminole County (don’t go) to see if there was Sonia Rykiel stuff left over and then to Target to grab some last pickins of the Rodarte wears.

Well, just on a weird whim, my man and I tried to get a table at Kobe Steakhouse in the afternoon on Valentine’s Day. We left after waiting in line for about 5 minutes. If you have never been to a Japanese steakhouse you should try it.  You get a mini-show, special Anglo-sauce and a Japanese cuisine that they have somehow made heavy and greasy but still quite delectable.

Devon is the heiress to the Benihana chain. And now that I am toggling back and forth between my blog screen and some bios on Miss Benihana, I am realizing that she is just a smidge more interesting than I realized. Which reminds me- I should not be so quick to judge model-turned-actresses. So push aside those old Latin phrases, economics equations, and silly scientific theories taking up space in your brain because here are…

+++ Things that you may not know about Devon Aoki +++

  • Her father is a former Olympic wrestler
  • She was discovered in NY at Rancid concert
  • Age 14, Kate Moss was her close mentor
  • Age 16, she replaced Naomi Campbell as the face of Versace
  • She is only 5′4
  • Learned how to drive (did not have a license) while filming 2 Fast 2 Furious
  • She is signed to 1/One Management, an agency owned by her mother

<< George Lois | Esquire cover >>

<< Dee de-hairing | It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia >>

I have been on a blog vacation. I go through these phases where I have a strong compulsion to write and post, and then I just get really sick of it. I was also on vacation but I can’t really use that excuse anymore because it has been a week since I returned from the West coast.

+ + + + +

Anyways, Valentine’s Day is approaching and ladies all over the globe will be primping, waxing, sugaring, shaving everything off in preparation for this cash cow holiday.

I saw a small thumbnail of the Esquire cover in the Harper’s Bazaar that I got in the mail today. It reminded me of an episode of IASIP. I got to flip through it while I drank my coffee and waited for my friend Huy for lunch at White Wolf, which BTW was filled with tons of old people. He was wearing a Proenza Schouler for Target sweatshirt which was available only at Opening Ceremony and Cloak pants.

I wanted his sweatshirt.
